About

Fewer yarns, chosen better.

Magnolia Yarns is a short shelf rather than a long catalogue: a handful of houses we trust, kept in stock in France, and sent wherever you knit.

Mohair, Silk, Alpaca, Merino, Cashmere, Angora, Linen, Cotton, Raffia

The idea

We would rather carry fewer yarns and know each one by touch. A short shelf, kept in France, where nothing is here to fill a gap. yarns Stars – mohair merino Yarn · G01 touch Harmony · 231 France Raffia · 105F ivory

The selection

A short list, carefully drawn

We would rather carry fewer yarns and stand behind every one of them. Each fibre on these shelves has been chosen for its quality, and each house we work with has earned its place beside the others. Nothing is here to fill a gap.

What we look for in a yarn

How we choose a yarn.

Before a yarn joins the shelf, it has to pass three tests. None of them shows in a photograph, which is exactly why we run them for you.

The twist

The twist

Does the stitch stay crisp?

Spun too loosely, a yarn goes flat under the needle and the stitch loses its edge. We look for yarns that hold their definition row after row.

The hand

The hand

Is it soft against the skin?

How a fibre feels running through your fingers, long before it becomes a garment. It is the part no photograph can tell you, so we do the touching for you.

The wear

The wear

Will it still look right next winter?

Colour that holds and a fabric that survives washing. The qualities you only discover months later are the ones we check first.

Up close

Closer than a photograph.

A screen flattens a yarn. The loupe gives back a little of what gets lost: the halo of a fibre, the sheen of the twist, the way one strand wraps around the next. The rest we check by hand, before a yarn ever reaches the shelf.

Move the loupe across the skein

Fibre by fibre

Where each yarn begins.

An animal, a plant, a cocoon: where a fibre starts tells you how it will behave on the needles, and long after the last row.

Mohair

From the Angora goat

Long, lustrous hair that catches the light and gives a knit its soft halo. Very warm for its weight, and often spun with silk to keep it smooth.
